What Makes Kansas Wine Special?
The answer? Kansas.
Kansas wine doesn’t taste like California wine, and it shouldn’t.
Our hot summers, cold winters, unpredictable weather, and soils shape what can be grown here and, ultimately, what ends up in your glass. Many traditional European wine grapes simply weren’t made for the extremes of the Midwest.
That challenge helped inspire a new generation of American wine grapes. Beginning in earnest in the 1980s, the University of Minnesota’s grape breeding program worked to develop varieties that combined great winemaking qualities with the cold-hardiness and resilience of North American grapes.
The result? Grapes like Frontenac, La Crescent, Marquette, and Itasca, arieties bred to withstand challenging climates while producing distinctive, high-quality wines.
Today, these grapes and other Midwest-friendly varieties give Kansas winemakers the opportunity to create something uniquely suited to our region: bright, fruit-forward, expressive wines you may not find on the typical wine shelf.
Kansas wineries aren’t trying to recreate Napa or Bordeaux. They’re making wine that reflects what grows well here.
Because Kansas wine doesn’t need to taste like somewhere else. It should taste like Kansas.
